Amazing Barbeque Sauce
March 30, 2011
Have you ever had a recipe that makes you do things. Weird things – like finding excuses to wander into the kitchen, just so you can sneak into the fridge and quickly dip your finger in some barbeque sauce.
I don’t usually make a habit of sticking my appendages into condiments, but this barbeque sauce is creating bad habits in me. Its smokey, sweet goodness keeps calling to me, making me wonder at the possibilities it creates.
Grilled barbeque chicken, ribs, pulled pork and chicken sandwiches, the possibilities are endless. This sauce will make you wish summer was already here, just so you can
whip out the charcoal and grill up something to slather this stuff on.
Or you could just eat it off your fingers – like me.
Amazing Barbeque Sauce
(prep: 10 min; cook: 20 min; yield: 2 cups)
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup plus 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
- 1/4 cup unsulfured molasses
- 2 tsp. hickory-flavored liquid smoke
- 1 tbsp. butter
- 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
- 1 clove fresh garlic, minced
- 1/4 tsp. onion powder
- 1/8 tsp. chili powder (optional)
- 1/2 tsp. paprika
- 1/8 tsp. celery seed
- 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. coarsely ground black pepper
1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, mix the ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, wine vinegar, molasses, liquid smoke, and butter.
2. Add the garlic powder, fresh garlic, onion powder, chili powder, paprika, celery seed, cinnamon, salt and pepper.
3. Reduce heat to low, and simmer for 20-30 minutes. For a thicker sauce simmer the full time, and if you prefer a thinner sauce, less time is needed. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
Tip: This sauce tastes very vinegary while cooking, don't worry though, make sure you allow the sauce to simmer for about 20-30 minutes, and it will mellow out and develop a really great depth of flavor. Of course, if you like your sauce tangy, then simmer for less time to suit your own tastes:)
This barbeque sauce is great as a final glaze to grilled meat. For pulled pork or pulled chicken sandwiches, just add a little water to thin the sauce out a bit. Enjoy!

I just so happened to buy some cute vintage quilted canning jars, that have been dying for me to put something home-made in them! Since I'm from Kansas City, I think I better give this a try this weekend! Love your Blog!
This is an amazing barbecue sauce for certain...wish I had a jar right now and I would make some ribs for dinner!!:)
Interesting - I've always done cider vinegar-based BBQ sauces...love the idea of using red wine vinegar!

Anything with the word barbecue attached to is is sold in my book. This looks like a fantastic recipe. Thanks for passing it along especially just in time for major grilling season.
Nothing tops a home made sauce. My step mom makes a sauce from scratch but she wont share the recipe. This looks beautiful. With all my grilling and smoking coming up I'll have to give it a whirl.
The recipe looks great.
Looks great. The sauce has such a beautiful, deep red color. We go through a lot of bbq sauce throughout the summer months and this would be fun to try out.
I was just telling my husband that I needed to find a new homemade bbq sauce...looks like I found it! Yummy! :)
Your BBQ sauce sound wonderful, with all of those flavorful ingredients, even cinnamon:) I'm bookmarking this now. Thanks for sharing.

Your BBQ sauce sounds tasty! Great photos!
Look at that gorgeous color... and the amazing taste of that molasses with some tomato sauce and garlic and paprika... YUM! I love barbecue sauce on burgers, to dip my fries and chicken strips, as well as to marinade foods...mmmmm.... summer, come on down! Please!
I saw a recipe for BBQ sauce on another blog a few days ago, but I like the sound of this too. I might have to have a cook-off between the two sauces.
This sounds so good! I'm really looking forward to grilling weather! :)
I'm a condiments lover. Ketchup, mustards, jams, BBQ sauce. You name it! This homemade BBQ sauce look sooo good. A great foodie gift too :)
This makes me wish summer were here right now! Love the adorable presentation too.
I'm so excited to fire up the grill again. Your BBQ sauce looks wonderful :)
I've been making my own barbecue sauce for about six months now and never want to buy the bottled stuff again - it's so much better from scratch. Mmmm! :) I can't believe how much the flavor changes as you let it simmer. The first time I made it I shook my head when the recipe said to let it simmer for an hour before tasting it and tasted it anyway. It was not that great! But if you just have a little patience, it pays off! The recipe you've shared looks good. Thanks!
I have never made my own bbq sauce, but I love how highly recommended this recipe comes :) This would be perfect for grilling, especially as the weather is getting warmer here in Phoenix. Definitely one to try...thank you!
This barbecue sauce looks amazing. Anything worth dipping a finger into has to be great!
Oh man does this look amazing.
We are always on the hunt for fantastic sauces for grilling - I can't wait to try this one.
Thanks for sharing, Amber!!
This sounds amazing! My husband is from Kansas City and now that we live in Minnesota he really misses his KC bbq. Thank you for sharing!
I've been known to sick my fingers into nutella, peanut butter, and frosting, but never bbq sauce. I'll have to try this out and see if it has the same effect on me!
Great idea to jar the barbeque sauce. Never thought to do that.
P.S. Wanted to let you know that I put you in my favorite blogs. Return the favor?
What a great recipe...I sure it is delicious and so perfect for Spring and Summer.
So how do you think would keep? I assume it's refridgerated? Thanks!
Hi Alison,
I think this sauce keeps very well, I've had mine refrigerated for a couple of weeks and is still fine. If you actually can it, it would last even longer.
I have been searching for a BBQ sauce recipe, I will have to try this one out. Thanks for posting it! Love your blog name by the way!

love it.
Hello :) I make this recipe today and I swear I haven't eaten a better pulled pork sandwich in all my life! Thank you so much for creating it and posting it. I do have a question though: How long can I keep it? The husband isn't very fond of BBQ sauce, so I'll be the only one eating it and you didn't mention how long it keeps. Thank you again; it is very tasty! (And now I know what liquid smoke is, ha ha!)
Woops! Nevermind, I just read the last few comments there. I'm glad it keeps for such a long time! Thanks again!
